My Story with Amber
We’ve had our battery installed for 6 months. You can read the details here. Our power bills dropped form an average of $300 per month to around $0 per month. I was tossing up between Amber, Glowbird, AGL and Origin as they all had reasonable VPP plans. I went with Amber because they were the only company that allowed manual control of my battery. The signup process to Amber was OK. They connect to your battery and solar inverter and it’s quite a complex process. It took about 2 weeks.
We have a 50kWh battery and 5kWh inverter, 10kW of panels and a family of 3, with reverse cycle aircon. Generally we have broken even with power use. On a sunny day we have excess, on a cloudy day we go backwards. Would I recommend Amber? Not sure. They have a $20 monthly subscription fee, then we pay approx $40 Electricity supply fee, then we get wholesale rates. So in a regular month we pay approx $60. If there’s a grid event and the export prices spike we make money. We’ve had 3 of them in the 6 months we’ve been signed up. If our inverter was bigger we’d be able to make more money from the grid events. So my thinking at the moment is that if your inverter is over 10kW, Amber is good, because the bigger you’re inverted than more money you make. If your inverter is under 10kW, AGL or Glowbird may be better, because they’re VPP subscription rates are set.
